His Dark Materials - `The Golden Compass - The Subtle Knife - The Amber Spyglass`

There is nothing I have read in my life, (both first time around at age 11, like the protagonist which was thrilling) and around 20 years after that, that has stayed with me so profoundly as this series by Philip Pullman. A genious. I was OVERJOYED to hear a physicist reference the Subtle Knife in a video installation by Hito Steyerl at the Fondazione Prada recently because the concepts touched in these books are so visionary. Read them to yourself, have a kid just so they can read it for the first time at age 11.
